The honorable Thokozile Masipa was born in 16 October in 1947 and grew up in Orlando west,Soweto,Johannesburg, she is the eldest of 10 children.After matriculating from Immaculata High School in the Alexandra township in 1966,She obtained a BA degree specializing in Social Work in 1974 and a LLB in 19970 from the University of South Africa (Unisa). It took her 10 years to complete her LLB,she was over 40 years when she qualified.She was admitted as an Advocate in 1991. Prior ton her law career,Masipa worked as a social worker as well as a crime reporter,which led to her interest in law.She worked for The World,Post and The Sowetan newspaper.She edited the Queen women's supplement of Peace magazine.In 1998,she was appointed as a judge in the then Transvaal Provincila Division of the High Court of South Africa,becoming the second black woman to be appointed as a judge in the High Court.
