ANN7 Empowers TUT journalism students

The news TV channels African News Network 7 (ANNA7) embraced the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) at the North campus on the 26 April.The Imbizo show for the ANN7 focus issue affecting society in grass roots levels.On the visit it focus on the regulation of media. The main of the gathering was to empower journalism students about the media at large. The capability of media was under discussion, how the media can tarnish lives of those in the public interest. Social media websites are some of the most popular haunts on the Internet. They have revolutionized the way people communicate and socialize on the Web.

Media regulation was tackled tooth to nail. The regulation of social media, in light of issues including the spread of fake news and scams. Business man Kenny Kunene a guest emphasised that “regulating social media will undermined the prevailing structures of our democracy”. But he also said social media users must be knowledgeable when engaging on social media usage. “My daughters’ reputation and my family were tarnished when it was balefully said that she was impregnated by my brother” Kunene noted. Kenny reasoned that if journalist can be given license for practising, they can minimize in fake news publishing.

Citizen journalism (also known as "public", "participatory", "democratic", "guerrilla" or "street" journalism) is based upon citizens “playing active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analysing and disseminating news and information. Ordinary citizens contribute in making news or updating the nation due to social media. A media user sometimes fabricates and spread fake news. We cannot abandon journalism because of people who have their own hidden agendas, we must find a way to fight fake and fabricated news “Tshamano Makhadi, Broadcast Specialist Lecturer at the Tshwane University of Technology in Department of Journalism said.

“Journalist should get a practising license that will hamper them from publishing fake and fabricated news “Solomon Mathebula a second year journalism student indicated.

 Simphiwe Malunga first year journalism student explained that “if government will give license that will be contradicting our democracy rights of freedom of expression “



Audrey Chimwanda the anchor explained that “the purpose of the visit to TUT journalism students was to tackle issues of media regulation and factors affecting the society like fake news"

Social media has its advantages and drawbacks . It is up to each user to use social sites wisely to enhance their professional and social life, and exercise caution to ensure they do not fall victim to online dangers.
