Born-Frees
The
term born free is explains a person born from 1994 upwards. Born frees are
often describes as privileged, spoilt and kids of a silver platter. They have
rights and access to vast amount of things. Rights come with responsibilities.
In most instances children of democracy often fail to adhere with the
responsibility that comes along with the responsibilities.
South Africa’s “born frees” – a nickname
for those born in the year of the country’s first free elections – turn 23 this
year, coming of age at the same time as a democratic SA. While they acknowledge
the importance of remembering the struggle, the future is where their focus
lies. Born frees are South Africa first group born during
democracy and comprise nearly a quarter of national population according to the
Government data. Children born after 1994, the year of the birth of democracy
are called the ‘born free’ generation. However, the title bears more
weight than raised free from the shackles of apartheid - it means living with
all the expectations of a nation.
In
South Africa freedom landed in 1994 April when the late Nelson Mandela was
released from prison after 27 years in prison. Briefly apartheid was a system
of institutionalised racial segregation and discrimination South Africa between
blacks and whites in 1994- 1991, .Freedom wasn’t obtained in walk at the park.
The born-free generation is reminded constantly by the older generations that
the culture of the country is in their hands and those they carry hope for a
better life all South Africans
“People who lived in the apartheid times were
oppressed and lived under very harsh conditions, and they remind us [born
frees] that we are reaping the benefits sewed by the people who fought to make
living conditions much better Ntombi Khumalo explained that being born free
means being active participants in the democracy of the country.
Ntando
Mlotshwa a Tshwane University of Technology explained that “freedom day is a
commemoration of the day when our country was freed from the white oppression”.
Mlotshwa added that it’s essentially that people must celebrate freedom day.
Many people are sceptical about the concept of born
frees is one of the biggest myths in post-apartheid South Africa. It is said
that the children born in 1994 and after, are born frees. Although nobody has
ever defined what born free means, one can reasonably deduct that the so-called
concept refers to the coincidence of being born in a free South Africa.
