In
a world where beauty often only goes skin deep and light skin is perceived by
many as more desirable, dark-skinned women find it more and more difficult to
love and be comfortable in their own skin. Skin
bleaching or skin lightening is the practice of using special creams or methods
on the skin to make it whiter or paler. It is a very common practice world
over, although it is more common among blacks who often do it, not necessarily
for its health benefits, but for the simple reason of wanting to attract
potential mates. Regardless of whether you are for or against it, there is no
denying the fact that skin bleaching has come to stay
However, it is important to draw our attention to the fact
that it is not only black women who bleach; other black men bleach as
well. Many black women and of course, black men, spend so much money on
expensive body crèmes to make them look whiter. The important question is what
factors motivate black people to bleach? Many people say black is
beautiful, yet why do some black women and men want to look white? Are there
any health implications for people who bleach?

Although
being “Yellow” in the modern days is seen as being the thee “Thing” in the
world. But there are still people who
abide the code saying that beauty is beautiful. African women oftentimes feel
inferior with their dark skins,
Skin
bleaching or whitening has unfortunately become a common phenomenon in many
countries. These products are used by women around the world in order to obtain
blemish-free, lighter and brighter skin tones. Yet, many ignore the health
warnings associated with using these often dangerous skin bleaching products.
Bleaching your skin is a controversial subject and one
that certainly raises many questions and concerns. Also referred to as skin
whitening or skin lightening, skin bleaching involves using chemicals to
lighten up the tone of the skin, or to bring about a more even and uniform
complexion on people who may have uneven skin tones. Whilst some chemicals will result in a lightening of the
skin, the risks involved are concerning. Many of the chemicals that people use
for this procedure are considered to be toxic, and can result in significant
short and long term damage to the skin.
You
think of skin lightening, the four pictures should come in mind. Skin bleaching
refer to the practice of using chemical substances in an attempt to lighten
skin tone or provide an even skin complexion by lessening the concentration of
melanin. Several chemicals have been shown to be effective in skin whitening,
while some have proven to be toxic or have questionable safety profiles, adding
to the controversy surrounding their use and impacts on certain ethnic groups...
When it comes to
knowing how to bleach your skin, it’s a matter of selecting the right product
for your needs, and importantly, being completely aware of the ingredients used
in any product that you are considering. Whilst it is always important to see
your dermatologist if you are thinking about trying a new skin care product to
improve your skin tone, remove age spots, sun spots, and other blemishes –
being self-informed is also important.
If you are in a
process of bleaching your skin, avoid using creams that contain the ingredient
Hydroquinone. According to Livestrong
it may cause scars on the skin, kidney, liver or nerve damage, abnormalities in
a new-borns baby if used during pregnancy, and might even have serious effects
of pigmentation on the eye and cause corneal damage.
