Spur Incidence 21-March 2017
We cannot forget that we
live in a country where, just 23 years ago, unwarranted violence towards people
of color was accepted as the norm. It's ironic that the video went viral on
Human Rights Day, day where we commemorate the slain black bodies whose only crime was
protesting the discriminatory laws of the land.
We’ve just be exposed to yet
another traumatizing racist act. The nation by feet’s and shocked by a white
man who attacked a black at Spur restaurant in The Glen mall in the Texamo Spur
at the Glen Shopping Centre, east of Johannesburg. A video of a white has been
widely shared of social platforms across the nation. The argument turned violence.
In the video, a man tells a woman to “disciplined “a child he claims to had hit
one of his children. He threatens to slap the woman.
He shoved a table at her.
The man has been since been banned from spur. Both we rude, although being rude
is not the same thing as being a racist, the woman accused the man of being
that- and a bully.
How shattering is the act to cause an outrage
on Human Rights Day. Are blacks not allowed to go public spaces and enjoy themselves?
As he raised his hand and threatened to give her a "p*** clap", I
couldn't help but think: "would this man have acted in the same manner if
he was interacting with another man, or even with a white woman?" It's
obvious that this man's pride was hurt. I'm not sure if he expected this woman
to just sit there and nod her head while he screamed at her. Was he expecting
an apology? Was he angered by the woman standing up for herself?
